Shopify or Amazon? Choosing the Right Channel for Your Product
Both channels have strengths and weaknesses. The right choice depends on your product, margin and goals.
One of the most critical decisions for beginners: which channel first? Here's a plain comparison.
Amazon: ready traffic, high competition
Amazon gives you a massive buyer base; you show up when your product is searched. The downsides are fees, competition and Amazon owning the customer relationship.
Shopify: you control the brand
On Shopify you control the brand experience, customer data and margin. In return you have to bring traffic yourself (ads/SEO).
Which one, when?
- If demand exists and your product is searched → start fast on Amazon
- If you have a strong brand story and repeat-purchase potential → Shopify DTC
- If your margin supports ads → both (multi-channel)
Our recommendation
For most brands the ideal end state is multi-channel: visibility on Amazon, brand and margin on Shopify. But the right sequence depends on your product — which is exactly what we clarify in the Discovery & Strategy package.
