FBA vs FBM: Which Amazon Model Fits Your Product?
FBA or FBM? A comparison on cost, control, the Prime badge and operational load — a decision guide from a team running both on its own brands.

FBA and FBM produce the same outcome (a sale) through different means. The right question isn't "which is better" but "which for which product." Here's the line-by-line comparison and the decision rule we use on our own brands.
The core difference
FBA: your inventory sits in Amazon's warehouse; Amazon packs, ships and handles returns. FBM: you ship each order yourself (from your own stock or a 3PL); Amazon is just the storefront.
The Prime badge: FBA's biggest edge
FBA products earn the Prime badge automatically; US buyers are used to Prime and read non-Prime listings as second-class. This shows up directly in conversion. FBM can earn the badge via Seller Fulfilled Prime, but that requires strict delivery SLAs.
Cost: who wins?
FBA charges fulfillment + storage fees in exchange for offloading operations to Amazon. FBM skips those fees but adds your own shipping/packing cost and time. For low-volume, high-unit-value or personalized products, FBM's math can work better — compare against your own numbers in FBA costs.
Control and flexibility
FBM gives you full control over packaging, brand touches (handwritten notes, custom boxes) and dispatch timing. FBA ties those details to Amazon's standard — a meaningful difference for personalized-product sellers who want to control brand experience.
Operational load
FBA removes most of the operational burden beyond inventory management — packing, shipping, customer service, returns all sit with Amazon. FBM keeps all of that with you or your 3PL. For a small team, FBA makes scaling easier.
When to choose which
- FBA: standard, repeatable, mid-size/light products where the Prime conversion effect matters
- FBM: personalized/made-to-order, very low volume, oversized/heavy products, or cases where FBA fees eat the margin
- Both: as we do on our own brands — standard lines on FBA, personalized ones on FBM, with FBM also serving as a backup listing against FBA stock-outs
The takeaway
FBA and FBM aren't mutually exclusive; most mature brands run both, per product. The decision isn't one rule — it's your product's size, personalization needs and margin math together.
