“You ship the container. On the shelf, someone else's brand takes the win.”
You Export B2B — And Want to Reach the End Customer
Does this look familiar?
- Your product sells in the target market, but the end customer never hears your name
- Most of the margin stays with the distributor and the retailer
- Your buyer base is a handful of large accounts; if one steps back, the year's plan breaks
- You have no data on who actually buys your product, or why
D2C isn't an alternative to B2B — it's a complement
The biggest fear here is legitimate: "What will my distributor say?" The right setup doesn't threaten the existing channel — a different product line, different pack configurations, or markets the distributor doesn't cover. What D2C really buys you isn't revenue but data and brand: who buys, why, and at what price. That knowledge strengthens your hand in the next B2B negotiation too.
The common mistake: retailing with wholesale logic
In B2B a product is a specification; in D2C it's a promise. The photo, dry description and catalog data that sell a container won't sell to a consumer. Packaging, visual language, product copy and return policy all get rebuilt — and the unit economics are entirely different: per-unit shipping dwarfs per-pallet cost.
How to build it
- Pick the product line: not the whole catalog — one shippable, clearly differentiated, consumer-facing line.
- Invest in packaging and content: retail packaging, professional imagery, benefit-led copy. Validate packaging first with 3D prototyping if needed.
- Channel: Amazon for proven-demand products; your own store when the brand story carries. Amazon gives most exporters faster feedback.
- Logistics: stock in-market (FBA or 3PL) — you know container freight; the missing piece is the last mile.
- Manage channel conflict: set pricing policy and product differentiation up front.
