Short answer: you don't pay most Etsy fees yourself — Etsy deducts them from your sales. Sale-based fees (transaction, payment processing, regulatory operating fee, Offsite Ads and the VAT on them) sit in your pending balance with the sale; listing fees, Etsy Ads and subscriptions come out of your current balance the moment they're charged. If your total balance is negative at the end of the month, an amount due appears on the 1st, payable between the 1st and the 15th. Because PayPal doesn't operate in Turkey, sellers located there pay it with a debit, credit or prepaid card.
We list the fee rates in a dated table on the Etsy fee calculator page. This post is about the money flow rather than the rates: where fees are taken from, when a bill appears, how VAT and reserves work, and how — and at what cost — money reaches your bank account.
The Payment account: two balances, two kinds of fees
Every Etsy Payments sale lands in your Etsy Payment account first. According to Etsy's "What are the Fees and Taxes for Selling on Etsy?" page, fees are handled in two ways:
- Sale-based fees: the transaction fee (including shipping and gift wrap), payment processing fee, regulatory operating fee, Offsite Ads fee and the VAT on them. They stay in your Pending balance with the sale's earnings; when the sale clears, the net amount moves to your current balance.
- Real-time fees: listing and renewal fees, Etsy Ads, shipping labels bought on Etsy and subscriptions such as Etsy Plus. These come out of your Current balance when charged.
Fixed fees such as the listing fee are published in USD. Etsy converts them to your Payment account currency at the market rate when the fee is reflected in your account, so the lira amount moves with the exchange rate.
How the listing fee is charged
Per Etsy's fee table:
- USD 0.20 per listing, added to your Payment account when the item is listed and owed whether or not it sells.
- A listing expires after 4 months. With auto-renew on, a new USD 0.20 is charged when it expires and the 4-month period starts over.
- If you sell several units of one listing in a single order, the first unit's listing fee has already been paid, so you're charged USD 0.20 for each additional unit.
- A private listing made for a specific buyer costs USD 0.20, charged when that buyer purchases it.
So there's no separate step to "pay" the listing fee: it comes out of your current balance if you have sales, and otherwise pushes your balance negative and joins the month-end amount due.
The monthly amount due: when, how and with what
Etsy's "How Do I Pay My Etsy Seller Fees?" page and its Fees & Payments Policy describe the process:
- If your total balance is negative at the end of the month, an amount due appears in your Payment account on the 1st and Etsy emails you.
- Manual payments are made between the 1st and the 15th. Under the policy, fees not paid in full within 15 days of the monthly statement make the account past due; Etsy may charge your card on file or use the other recoupment steps in its Payments Policy.
- If you make a sale while you owe money, the sale's net amount is applied to the amount due.
- To pay: Shop Manager → Finances → Payment account → "Pay now". Because PayPal doesn't operate in Turkey, sellers located there must use a debit, credit or prepaid card.
- Auto-billing is available only to shops located in the US.
- If you were suspended for an overdue bill, you have to pay on Etsy.com rather than in the app.
VAT on seller fees and the VAT ID
Etsy's "How VAT Is Collected on Seller Fees" page lists Turkey among the countries where VAT applies to seller fees and monthly VAT invoices are issued. Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy states that all fees are listed exclusive of VAT.
- Without a VAT ID: VAT on VAT-eligible fees appears in your current balance. On the 1st of each month you get an invoice listing the previous month's VAT-eligible fees and the VAT you were charged.
- With a VAT ID: you establish a business-to-business relationship with Etsy and aren't charged VAT on seller fees. You still receive a monthly invoice stating that no VAT was charged.
- Invoices are English-language PDFs in USD, downloaded on a computer from your Payment account by selecting the month.
- VAT-eligible items include the regulatory operating fee, payment processing fees and the deposit fee.
You add a VAT ID under Shop Manager → Finances → VAT ID. In some countries Etsy requires sellers approaching the national sales threshold to add one to keep selling, and in some it must report the VAT ID together with seller fee totals to the local tax authority. Etsy's Help Center doesn't say which number a Turkey-based seller should enter there. Whether you sell as a sole proprietor, a company or under the artisan tax exemption, confirm with your accountant what to enter and how to book these invoices.
Payment account reserves
A reserve holds a percentage of your physical-item sales for longer than the standard processing time. Per Etsy's "What is a Payment Account Reserve?" page:
- A reserve may be placed because of risk factors such as your first sale, a sudden jump in orders or refunds, orders missing tracking or orders shipped late. Etsy emails you, and the percentage and holding period appear in your Payment account.
- Add valid tracking and, if Etsy can confirm the order is in transit, that order's reserved funds are released immediately. If it can't, the funds stay held for the full period. Etsy can't confirm tracking for every carrier.
- Digital item sales aren't held. Star Sellers don't get a reserve.
- During a reserve, refunds, fees, shipping labels and Etsy Ads keep coming out of your current balance; if your balances can't cover them, your card on file is charged for the difference.
- Orders with held funds carry an "Order in reserve" badge in Orders.
If you ship from Turkey, check on your first orders whether Etsy can verify your carrier's tracking — unverified tracking means the reserve runs for its full period.
Deposits: schedule, minimums and the deposit fee
A deposit moves the available funds in your Payment account to your bank account. The Turkey values from Etsy's "How to Receive Your Etsy Payments Deposit" page:
| Item | Turkey (TRY account) |
|---|---|
| Deposit minimum | TRY 50 |
| Fee-free threshold | TRY 600 |
| Fee below the threshold | TRY 42 (subject to VAT where applicable) |
| Daily deposit minimum | TRY 600 |
- New sellers default to weekly deposits, every Monday. Change it to daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly under Shop Manager → Finances → Payment settings.
- If the amount is above TRY 50 but below TRY 600, a TRY 42 deposit fee is deducted; above TRY 600 there's no fee. On a daily schedule, nothing is sent on days the available amount is under TRY 600. Etsy suggests a less frequent schedule to avoid the fee.
- Updating your bank details puts a 5-day hold on the funds in your Payment account.
- Once sent, a standard deposit can take 1–5 business days to show up, depending on your bank.
Currency conversion fee
If your listing currency (e.g. USD) differs from your Payment account currency (TRY), Etsy converts your sales funds for you and charges 2.5% when conversion is required. It's a separate line on top of the per-order fees, so price with it in mind.
Shop set-up fee
In some locations Etsy charges a one-time, non-refundable set-up fee to open a shop; the amount varies by location and, where it applies, is shown during shop set-up. Under the policy, a pending charge is placed on your card when you confirm it and processed once your shop is open and able to take orders. Etsy doesn't publish the amount for Turkey in its Help Center; the figure shown during set-up is what applies.
FAQ
How do I pay the Etsy listing fee? You don't pay it separately. USD 0.20 per listing comes out of your current balance when the item is listed; if your balance can't cover it, it goes into the month-end amount due, which you pay by card between the 1st and the 15th.
What is the Etsy deposit fee? For a Turkey-based seller, it's the TRY 42 charged when a deposit to your bank is below TRY 600, subject to VAT where applicable. Deposits above TRY 600 don't incur it.
Can I pay my Etsy bill with PayPal from Turkey? No. Etsy says that because PayPal doesn't operate in Turkey, sellers located there must use a debit, credit or prepaid card.
What is an Etsy VAT ID and do I need one? It's the number that identifies your business for tax purposes. If a Turkey-based seller adds one, Etsy doesn't charge VAT on seller fees; without it, VAT comes out of your balance. Etsy doesn't specify which number to enter for Turkey — check with your accountant.
What happens if I don't pay my Etsy bill? An amount not paid within 15 days of the monthly statement is past due. Etsy can charge your card on file or suspend the account; a suspended account's bill has to be paid on Etsy.com.
When does Etsy money reach my bank? It's sent on your deposit schedule (weekly on Mondays by default for new sellers) and shows up within 1–5 business days depending on your bank. If your account has a reserve, the held amount waits until tracking is confirmed or the period ends.
Summary
Etsy fees aren't paid one by one; they come out of your Payment account balance, and if that goes negative you get a bill at the start of the month that you pay by card. For a Turkey-based seller, four things matter most: the bill is paid by card, not PayPal; without a VAT ID, VAT is added to fees; tracking releases reserves early; and every deposit under TRY 600 costs TRY 42.
