Return Rate Impact Simulator
Return rate is usually written off as a category constant and never costed. But a return doesn't cost you the refund — and totalled up, it often exceeds the entire ad budget.
A return doesn't cost you the refund: it costs two shipping legs, packaging, handling and the share of goods you can't resell. The tool totals that.
What one point of return rate is worth
36.234
Cutting the rate from 14% to 13% is worth this much a year — the same as a 0.45% price rise.

How it's calculated
A return costs four things: both shipping legs (if you pay the return), replacement packaging, handling and inspection, and the largest one, the resale loss.
The resale loss has two parts: the unsellable share is written off at cost, and the sellable share loses the markdown. If opened stock can still sell at full price, this shrinks — which is why packaging design is a returns decision.
It then prices one point of return rate for a year and compares it to an equivalent price rise. That comparison changes decisions: for most brands a point of returns beats a percent of price, and it doesn't cost conversion.
What people most often forget
- Most returns are wrong expectations, not bad products. Size guides, colour accuracy and scale in imagery need no product change and act fastest.
- On a marketplace, returns feed account health. Beyond the cost, they lift the defect rate and put the account at risk.
- Measure before removing free returns. The conversion effect varies by category and can cost more than it saves.
- Record return reasons. “Too small” and “arrived damaged” are different problems with different fixes; without the data you can't know where to invest.
- On cross-border returns, shipping the item back often costs more than the item. Local disposal or donation is usually cheaper — but only if planned in advance.
Scope, sources and freshness
A scenario calculator that assumes no category averages: return rate, resellability and markdown are all your inputs. Reputational cost, churn and marketplace metric damage aren't priced here — real, but wider than this tool. Keep every field in one currency.

Frequently asked
What does a return really cost?
Not the refund: outbound and return shipping, replacement packaging, handling, and the share that can't be resold. Entered honestly, the total often approaches half the unit cost.
How do I reduce returns?
In order: sharpen the size guide, align images with real colour and scale, set expectations in the copy, and strengthen packaging. None touch the product and all act fast.
Should I offer free returns?
It depends on the category: it lifts conversion but adds a shipping leg. Measure for two weeks before removing it.
What do I do with a cross-border return?
Shipping it home usually costs more than the item. Common answers: a local return address or 3PL, local disposal or donation for low-value goods, and local outlet resale for mid-value ones.
