Etsy Tag Builder
Etsy gives you 13 tags of up to 20 characters each. Most sellers either leave slots empty or write a 21-character phrase and never work out why it won't save.
Etsy allows 13 tags of up to 20 characters. Fill the fields below; the tool builds combinations, separates the too-long ones and drops duplicates.
Start filling the fields — tags build here.
Your inputs stay in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
How it's calculated
Tags come from two sources: your own tags go first, and the remaining slots are filled with combinations of the attributes you enter (product, material, occasion, recipient), which produces multi-word phrases on their own.
Anything over 20 characters is separated out with its length shown. Etsy won't save those tags and won't tell you — the slot just stays empty.
Duplicates are dropped and single-word tags are counted and flagged. One word competes with the entire marketplace; buyers search in phrases, and the long tail is a small seller's only real advantage.
The attributes also produce a title draft (up to 140 characters). Etsy looks for alignment between tags and title — the same phrases appearing in both helps.
What people most often forget
- Use all 13. An empty tag is free visibility declined — the single most common gap we see on Etsy shops.
- Don't spend two tags on singular and plural. Etsy treats them together; give the second slot to a new phrase.
- Echo tags in the title and description. Etsy weighs the consistency between them; a phrase that lives only in a tag is weak.
- Write in the buyer's language. Etsy does not translate your tags for the shopper.
- Occasion and recipient tags open seasonal traffic. Phrases like “anniversary gift” convert best in specific weeks — add them ahead of the season.
Scope, sources and freshness
Thirteen tags at 20 characters each are Etsy's long-standing limits, though it is worth confirming in your own shop manager. The tool does not connect to Etsy and brings no volume data — it shapes what you enter, separates what exceeds the limit and flags weak tags. Everything runs in your browser.

Frequently asked
How many tags does Etsy allow?
Thirteen per listing, each up to 20 characters. Using all of them is the cheapest Etsy SEO improvement available.
Should I use single-word tags?
Prefer not to. One word competes in a huge pool; two or three word phrases match how buyers actually search and convert better.
How often should I change tags?
Not constantly. Make one change, then give it two to four weeks; changing several variables at once tells you nothing.
Should tags match the title?
Not word for word, but they should overlap. Etsy weighs consistency across title, tags and description — your top three or four phrases should appear in all of them.
